Budget 2021
The overall budget for 2021 amounted to 42.5 M€. NWO contributed 24.1 M€ as basic structural funding (equivalent to ~57% of the total budget), 1.4 M€ incidental contributions (3%) and 3.5 M€ project funding (8%). Other project-related additional funding was received through EU projects (2.0 M€ or 5%) and other national and international projects were acquired in competition (7.6 M€ or 18%). Chartering of RV Pelagia to third parties yielded a revenue of 3.4 M€ (8%). Miscellaneous and ad hoc funding amounted to 0.5 M€ (1%).

Staff 2021
On average, NIOZ employed a staff of 321 full-time equivalents (FTE), representing a total headcount of 355 employees. Of this total, 153 (43%) employees were women and 202 (57%) employees were men; 113 (32%) employees were of foreign nationality, representing 39 different countries.
The scientific staff, including tenure track scientists, postdocs and PhD students accounted for 53% of the total staff, scientific support staff for 19%, and technical staff, ship crew and services & administration accounted for 28%.

Scientific Output 2021
NIOZ scientists authored or co-authored 374 peer-reviewed journal articles, 1 book (monograph), 4 chapters in books, 10 non-refereed publications and 14 professional publications. Out of the 374 peer-reviewed journal articles, 334 (89%) appeared as open access publications, an increase of 10% compared to 2020. Fourteen PhD students received their degrees: at the University of Groningen (3), Utrecht University (5), Ghent University (3), University of Twente (3). Our scientists participated in 191 scientific committees and editorial boards of scientific journals. 13 major research grants (prestigious/more than 500KE) and 22 prizes were awarded.
Ship time: In 2021, RV Pelagia sailed for 146 days for Dutch scientific programmes. In addition, the ship sailed 17 days for EUROFLEETS+ (EU). International scientific teams used RV Pelagia 134 days for charter cruises.
RV Navicula sailed for 180 days, in the Wadden Sea and in the Grevelingen and Haringvliet.

Teaching and Outreach 2021
NIOZ issued 18 press releases on scientific highlights and the institute was mentioned 96 times in national newspapers, 129 times in regional newspapers, 181 on Dutch websites and 447 on international websites. Journalists wrote 99 articles in professional journals after interviewing NIOZ scientists. Our scientists appeared 139 times on radio or tv (Source Meltwater News Database).
In Q3 of 2020, NIOZ started its own podcast ‘Van Delta tot Diepzee’, each episode consisting of a personal 45-minute in-depth interview (in Dutch) with a NIOZ-scientist about their research. Eleven of these monthly interviews were also broadcast on local Radio Texel in 2021.
NIOZ organised a public lecture and discussion series BiodiversityXL Live! with partners Naturalis, Westerdijk Institute and Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW): an online meeting place for all scientists and students in the field of biodiversity in the Netherlands (but also attracting listeners from other countries).
Due to COVID-19 many on-site events and visits had to be cancelled. NIOZ was visited by 19 groups for presentations and guided tours at NIOZ or nearby the institute because of restricted access to the buildings. Four (online) symposia were organised and 27 public lectures given by NIOZ staff at the institute or elsewhere.
NIOZ scientists were involved in 31 (online) courses, and 126 students did internships (mostly remotely) at NIOZ. NIOZ scientists participated in 12 societal advisory bodies.
