Budget 2023
The overall budget for 2023 amounted to 46.0 M€. NWO contributed 28.2 M€ as basic structural funding, 1.0 M€ incidental contributions and 4.1 M€ project funding. Other project-related additional funding was received through EU projects (2.0 M€) and other national and international projects were acquired in competition (10.4 M€). Chartering of RV Pelagia to third parties yielded a revenue of 0.2 M€. Miscellaneous and ad hoc funding amounted to 0.1 M€.
Staff 2023
On average, NIOZ employed a staff of 323 full-time equivalents (FTE), representing a total headcount of 352 employees. Of this total, 149 (42%) employees were women; 118 (34%) employees were of foreign nationality, representing 33 different countries. The scientific staff, including tenure track scientists, postdocs and PhD students accounted for 52% of the total staff, scientific support staff for 19%, and technical staff, ship crew and services & administration accounted for 29%.
Scientific Output 2023
NIOZ scientists authored or co-authored 333 peer-reviewed journal articles, 2 books (monograph), 4 chapters in books, 9 non-refereed publications and 6 professional publications. Out of the 333 peer-reviewed journal articles, 310 (93%) appeared as open access publications. 12 PhD students received their degrees: at Utrecht University (10), University of Groningen (1) and TU Delft (1). In 2023, NIOZ scientists held 25 professorships at universities in the Netherlands. That represents half of our senior scientist population, showing the academic recognition of our work. Principal investigators (PI’s) together held 198 other external functions, such as memberships of committees and editorial boards. Our scientists were awarded 10 research grants of ≥ K€ 500 of which 2 are individual grants; 14 research grants of K€ 250 to K€ 500 of which 1 is an individual grant; 15 research grants of ≤ K€ 250; and 2 prizes. Ship time: In 2023, RV Pelagia sailed for 183 days for Dutch scientific programmes. In addition, the ship sailed 15 days for EUROFLEETS+ (EU). Foreign scientific teams used RV Pelagia 17 days for charter cruises and RV Navicula 2 days for charter cruises. RV Navicula sailed for 132 days for Dutch science programmes in the Wadden Sea and in the Grevelingen and Voordelta.
Outreach & education 2023
NIOZ news and scientists were brought to the attention of media and the public in various ways, including direct press contacts and press releases. Also, NIOZ experts were asked to comment on breaking and developing (inter)national news stories by journalists. In 2023, free publicity added up to 2986 ‘earned media’ items. NIOZ participated with a variety of family activities at the Expeditie Next festival, at Watersnoodmuseum in Zeeland, and, around World Ocean Day, in the Museon (The Hague) and at the Ocean Race (Scheveningen). Other NIOZ World Ocean Day activities were the Seasonality Symposium for international chefs at Texel, and an event for policymakers at Nieuwspoort, the Hague. NIOZ scientists gave 36 public lectures. For 2023, the category ‘other’ refers to 15 performances of the theater show ‘Overvloed’ about climate change by a NIOZ oceanographer and a comedian throughout The Netherlands, plus 15 related podcast interviews with guests. NIOZ Texel and Yerseke were visited by 23 groups, and 12 symposiums were organized at NIOZ or elsewhere by NIOZ staff. The number of NIOZ PI’s in societal advisory boards was 15. Many NIOZ scientists were involved in education, with 39 courses, and 181 students doing their internships at NIOZ.
