Outreach and teaching 2024
NIOZ news and scientists were brought to the attention of media and the public in various ways, including direct press contacts and press releases. Also, NIOZ experts were asked to comment on breaking and developing (inter)national news stories by journalists. Among the most frequently shared stories were ‘plastic eating fungus’ and ‘animals found living under the sea floor’. In 2024, free publicity added up to 2153 ‘earned media’ items. An important event for NIOZ took place on 15 February 2024 when Research Vessel Wim Wolff was christened in the harbor of the NIOZ on Texel. Various events were organized on 5, 6 and 8 June, focusing on ocean policy and science and the National Ocean Science Conference. On 8 June, World Ocean Day was promoted in six different Dutch museums in the form of lectures, workshops and activities. NIOZ scientists gave 12 public lectures. For 2024, the category ‘other’ refers to 8 performances of the theater show ‘Overvloed’ (a pun on abundance and floods) about climate change by a NIOZ oceanographer and a comedian throughout The Netherlands. NIOZ Texel and Yerseke were visited by 38 groups, and 10 symposiums were organized at NIOZ or elsewhere by NIOZ staff. The number of societal advisory boards which PI's are a part of was 13. Many NIOZ scientists were involved in education, with 42 courses, and 139 students doing their internships at NIOZ.
