Budget 2025

The overall budget for 2025 amounted to 62.5 M€. NWO contributed 36.3 M€ as basic structural funding, 0.3 M€ incidental contributions and 8.7 M€ project funding. Other project-related additional funding was received through EU projects (2.0 M€) and other national and international projects were acquired in competition (12.6 M€). Chartering of RV Pelagia to third parties yielded a revenue of 1.8 M€. Miscellaneous and ad hoc funding amounted to 0.8 M€.

Staff 2025

On average, NIOZ employed a staff of 324 full-time equivalents (FTE), representing a total headcount of 351 employees. Of this total, 146 (42%) employees were women; 104 (30%) employees were of foreign nationality, representing 38 different countries. The scientific staff, including tenure track scientists, postdocs and PhD students accounted for 50% of the total staff, scientific support staff for 17%, and technical staff, ship crew and services & administration accounted for 33%.

Scientific Output 2025

NIOZ scientists authored or co-authored 322 peer-reviewed journal articles, 0 books (monograph), 6 chapters in books, 8 non-refereed publications and 6 professional publications. Out of the 322 peer-reviewed journal articles, 317 (98%) appeared as open access publications. 14 PhD students received their degrees: at Utrecht University (6), University of Groningen (6), University Twente (1) and Wageningen University & Research (1). In 2025, NIOZ scientists held 24 professorships at universities in the Netherlands. That represents half of our senior scientist population, showing the academic recognition of our work. Principal investigators (PI’s) together held 230 other external functions, such as memberships of committees and editorial boards.

Our scientists were awarded 10 research grants of ≥ K€ 500 of which 3 are individual grants; 11 research grants of K€ 250 to K€ 500 of which 1 is an individual grant; 10 research grants of ≤ K€ 250; and 0 prizes. Ship time: In 2025, RV Pelagia sailed for 102 days for Dutch scientific programmes. RV Wim Wolff sailed for 125 days for Dutch science programmes in the Wadden Sea and in the Grevelingen and Voordelta. Foreign scientific teams used both vessels for 48 days for charter cruises. In addition, NMF supported international collaborations during 7 days of scientific expeditions on board RV Pelagia through barter activities with OFEG partners.

Outreach and education 2025

NIOZ news and scientists were brought to the attention of media and the public in various ways, including direct press contacts and 23 press releases via Dutch press agency ANP (10), and International Eurekalert (13), based on 16 unique science stories. Also, NIOZ experts were asked to comment on breaking and developing (inter)national news stories by journalists. In 2025, free publicity added up to 1849 ‘earned media’ items. NIOZ scientists gave 22 public lectures. NIOZ Texel and Yerseke were visited by 62 groups, and 6 symposiums were organized at NIOZ or elsewhere by NIOZ staff. The number of societal advisory boards which PIs are a part of was 13. Many NIOZ scientists were involved in education, with 45 courses, and 145 students doing their internships at NIOZ.
