NIOZ follows the NWO strategy. We want to be a transparent institute with a healthy working climate and an inclusive culture, where people from diverse backgrounds and gender bring their talents and further develop these talents. We aim for inclusive decision-making processes and expect our leadership to show visible commitment, awareness of bias, and cultural intelligence. In the collective of NWO institutes, NIOZ is working towards an inclusive system of recognition and rewards that serves our own personnel.

Scientific breakthroughs are rarely made by humans working in isolation. At NIOZ, we strongly believe in team science involving cross- and interdisciplinary work. In addition to our multidisciplinary approach, cooperation skills are among our intrinsic talents. This holds for our own organization but applies equally to external parties we collaborate with. The expertise necessary to support the national roles of the NWO institutes, including NIOZ, is reflected in a diverse range of staff profiles.

In addition to researchers, NIOZ staff also include highly skilled technical experts, mechanical engineers, data managers, seafaring staff, project managers, science communication experts, specialized support staff and more. We strive to understand the art of working together under all circumstances. We trust our staff members to share the NIOZ organization's responsibilities and to show organizational citizenship behaviour where needed, meaning that they feel invited to contribute positive and constructive actions that benefit the organization. All our staff are trained and supported through our NIOZ Talent management strategy “Freedom to succeed and responsibility to engage”.
